Babas debuts affordable Sunday Suppers
And updates on spots coming in from Miami and Wilmington
Dinner for less than $20
Babas on Wentworth recently debuted Sunday Suppers. This past Sunday, July 26, the restaurant offered braised beef with salsa verde with a side of eggplant with feta for $15. The previous weekend it was Thai curry with potato and pineapple for $10. If you haven’t checked out the gorgeous new space at 115 Wentworth Street, this could be your excuse.
Another tip: While the College of Charleston students are gone for the summer, it’s easy to slip into the aperitivo hour at the Babas on Wentworth location to take advantage of the free snacks. Expect boquerones, focaccia, good olives, spicy cucumbers, marinated white beans, and pickled okra, from 4-6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday.
A mix of cultures on Coming Street
Cooter Soup broke the news of Kaia back in March, and it appears that the 186 Coming Street restaurant will open “later this summer.” Signage is up, and they’ve hired a local PR firm to ramp up the buzz, so I’ll be keeping an eye on it.
Kaia comes from Miami-based chef Raheem Sealey of KYU, Shiso, and Drinking Pig BBQ. The menu will combine the flavors of Southeast Asia, the Lowcountry, and the Caribbean. In March, Sealey told me to expect curries, fried chicken, and a focus on local vegetables.
Dino lattes
Hidden Grounds Coffee is expanding from Wilmington, North Carolina, to 17 Magazine Street in Charleston. Located next to the old jail (ahem, 21 Magazine), the shop will offer coffee drinks and dinosaur merch. Local favorite Second State is right up the street on Beaufain, but it’s always packed, so if Hidden Grounds offers free Wi-Fi, I expect people will find it.
