I’ve been keeping tabs on the former McCrady’s Tavern space at 2 Unity Alley ever since entrepreneur Martin Sprock announced he purchased the building and had plans for a new restaurant and music bar. That was in 2021, and I didn’t see much movement, but now there’s brown paper on the windows and whispers of a steakhouse and private club on the way.
Sprock, who founded Moe’s Southwest Grill and Planet Smoothie, boasts on his website that he leads a portfolio of 250 establishments with over $200 million in annual revenue. This newest project seems to be much more high-end than his current fast-casual establishments.
The website for the Chameleon Club describes the concept as “… a private, invite-only dinner and cocktail club set within Charleston’s historic Long Room at 2 Unity Alley.” And explains the atmosphere as “classic chic décor, swivel chairs, incredible music, and giant martinis.”
The details go on to include “… soaring ceilings, chandeliers, art-lined rooms, lounge seating built for lingering, a full bar, exceptional music, four distinct dining spaces, and three lounges—all designed for conversation, comfort, and a little theater.”
The membership application requires a password, which means you need to be referred by a current member to apply, and to be approved, three members must endorse you, and the board must agree.
I miiiiiiiiight have guessed the password and saw the application. Questions include: current employer, alma mater, where you grew up, where you live now, two favorite movies, two favorite songs, and the name of the person who referred you. I thought about applying, but I don’t think they’d be impressed if I stated my two favorite films are The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Being There.
Membership includes access to the Chameleon Club and preferred reservations at Cloud Bar Restaurant and Clarence Foster’s Bar. These are the public spaces on the first floor of the Unity Alley building.
Cloud Bar is described as a chophouse offering “premium steaks, fresh lobster, craft cocktails, and an elevated dining experience in a stylish atmosphere.” Clarence Foster’s will occupy the former McCrady’s 2.0 space at 155 East Bay Street. It is described as a sports and martini bar offering “elevated comfort food, classic cocktails, and a welcoming table for every occasion.”
I reached out to Sprock via his website for comment, but I haven’t heard back from him or his team.
